The most popular type of vintage posters are very possibly ad related ones. Posters today aren't really used in the same ways that they were years ago - today most of them depict pop icons, actors, or models. But back in the day, posters were used largely for advertisements in malls and other gathering areas.

Because television and radio weren't nearly as widespread and popular as they are today, advertisers had to have some way of getting into contact with potential buyers. Posters fit the bill rather nicely, as they could be large and colorful, and grab attention very efficiently. They could also be targetted to the intended audience in both imagery and language. Many vintage posters are modeled after the ad model as well.
